Pneumatic Circuits and Systems Course Content:
Duration: 24 HRs
Target Audience:
- Mechanical Engineering Students (2nd year and above)
- Mechatronics and Industrial Engineering Students
- Technical Training Participants in Automation and Control
Course Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the basic principles and components of pneumatic systems.
- Design and interpret pneumatic circuits.
- Select and connect pneumatic components for different applications.
- Troubleshoot and maintain pneumatic systems safely.
- Integrate sensors and control elements into automated pneumatic systems.
Lecture 1: Introduction to Pneumatics
Theory :
- Definition and applications of pneumatic systems
- Advantages vs. disadvantages of pneumatics
- How compressed air is produced
- Air treatment: filtering, drying, lubricating
- Overview of safety in pneumatic systems
Practical :
- Demonstrate compressor operation and air storage
- Introduce the air treatment unit (FRL)
- Connect basic air supply system to a training panel
- Identify real pneumatic components on the panel
Lecture 2: Pneumatic Actuators and Valves
Theory :
- Types of pneumatic actuators:
- Single-acting cylinders
- Double-acting cylinders
- Classification and function of valves:
- 2/2, 3/2, 5/2, 5/3 valves
- Symbols used in ISO 1219
Practical :
- Install and operate single and double-acting cylinders
- Test different valve configurations
- Manual actuation of valves using push buttons
Lecture 3: Directional, Flow, and Check Valves
Theory :
- Function and symbols of directional control valves
- Flow control valves and speed control
- Check valves and shuttle valves
- Importance of valve timing and response
Practical :
- Build test circuit using 3/2 and 5/2 valves
- Use flow control valve to adjust cylinder speed
- Demonstrate unidirectional and bidirectional flow
Lecture 4: Pneumatic Logic and Basic Circuit Design
Theory :
- Introduction to pneumatic logic (AND / OR / NOT)
- Time delay valves and memory functions
- Common circuit errors and how to avoid them
- Standards for circuit diagrams
Practical :
- Build circuits using logic functions (AND/OR)
- Demonstrate time delay circuits with timers
- Assemble basic memory circuits
Lecture 5: Air Treatment and System Maintenance
Theory :
- Detailed function of FRL units (Filter-Regulator-Lubricator)
- Air consumption calculation
- Leak detection techniques
- Maintenance procedures and common issues
Practical :
- Install and test FRL unit in a live system
- Perform leak detection using soap solution
- Measure air flow rate and regulator adjustment
Lecture 6: Sequential Control of Pneumatic Systems
Theory :
- Sequencing principles and cascading control
- Step diagram and logic chart creation
- Interlocking and feedback loops in sequence control
Practical :
- Design and build 2-step cylinder sequences
- Implement a 3-step sequencing process
- Diagnose faults in sequence operation
Lecture 7: Sensors in Pneumatics
Theory :
- Types of sensors in pneumatic systems:
- Proximity, inductive, reed switches
- Working principle and wiring methods
- Feedback integration for automated control
Practical :
- Install reed switches on cylinders
- Connect proximity sensors to relay/control
- Test sensor-activated cylinder movement
Lecture 8: Electro-Pneumatics
Theory :
- Solenoid valve operation and wiring
- Electrical control elements: relays, push buttons, switches
- Safety considerations in low-voltage systems
- Basic ladder diagrams
Practical :
- Wire solenoid valves and test with 24V DC supply
- Assemble and test an electro-pneumatic control system
- Use push buttons to control cylinder actuation
Lecture 9: Final Project and System Integration
Theory :
- Review of system design steps
- Safety checks and troubleshooting methods
- Overview of documentation and circuit reporting
- Project planning and teamwork skills
Practical :
- Students work in groups to design and build a complete system (e.g., automatic gate, bottle press, or part separator)
- Present functionality and documentation
- Instructor-led evaluation and performance feedback
