High Voltage Substation Control & Protection

 Date: To Be Determined.
 Duration: 2- 3 Months (2 Sessions Per Week)

 Note: Highly recommended to be Spited into Two Levels Instead of One.

1. Introduction:
This Course Will Cover all Fundamentals in Regards to High Voltage & MV Substations
Control & Protection Facilities, The Course Includes Well Explanation for All Substation
Equipment’s (Principle of Operation, Sizing, Different Manufacturing), The Academic
Background Is Highly Considered Along with The Practical Constrains.

2. Who should attend?
This Course Is Intended for Practicing Engineers, Graduate Students and Seniors Students
Whom Are Welling to Contribute in The Field of High Voltage Power System Control &
Protection.

3. Previous Experience:
Previous Experience with High Voltage Equipment Control and Protection Isn’t Required.

4. Course Content:
1. Introduction to Substations:
Definition for Substation Main Elements and Principles of Operation, Arrangement
of Different Substation (Single Busbar Single Breaker Arrangement, Double Busbar
Single Breaker Arrangement, Double Busbar Double Breaker Arrangement and One
& Half Breaker Arrangement) For Both (AIS & GIS) Substations.
2. Different Substation Contracts:
Examples for Substation Contracts & Scope of Work, This Part Includes the Min.
Requirements for Each Substation Main Equipment (C.B, D.S, E.S, Power
Transformer, NER, MVSWGR…Etc.), Also Includes the Parameters Required for
Each Equipment (Operating Voltage, Rated Voltage & Current, Basic Level of
Insulation – BIL-…Etc.), The IEC Requirements Is Well Considered.
3. Substation SLD Work Shop:
The Work Shop Covers How The SLD Is Drawn Using AutoCAD Tool For
Different Types Of Substations.
– Templates Are Provided.
– General Layouts for Existing Substations Are Explained.
4. Introduction to Substation Control & Protection:
This Part Covers the Protection Relays Used in Substation Protection, For Example
Over Current & Earth Fault (50,51,50N & 51N), Directional Over Current &
Directional Earth Fault (67 & 67N), Distance Protection (21), Differential
Protection (87), Bus Bar Protection & Breaker Fail (50BF), Also Covers Different
Substation Protection Schemes (Relay & Metering).
5. Relay & Metering Work Shop:
The Work Shop Covers How to Draw Relay & Metering Scheme Using AutoCAD
Tool for Different Types of Substation.
– Templates Are Provided.
6. Front View of Protection Panels Work Shop:
The Work Shop Covers How to Draw the Front View of Different Protection Panels.
7. Deep in Details:
From Now Here, We Start to Dive Deep in Each Main Equipment to Well
Understand the Components & The Differences of Each Type, For Example Power
Transformer, Disconnectors, Circuit Breakers, Disconnectors, Surge Arrestors,
Zigzag Transformers & MVSWGR’s …Etc.
– Different Manufacturing. Ratings & Existing in Services Equipment’s Are
illustrated.
8. AC/DC Systems for Substations:
This Part Covers the Function & Operation of the Aux. System (Aux. Transformer,
Diesel Generators, Batteries & Chargers) Located in The Substation.
9. Sizing of Aux. System Package Work Shop:
This Work Shop Cover Sizing of Aux. Transformer, Chargers, Batteries After
Creating Load List.
– Different Calculation Sheets Are illustrated.
10.Creating Cable List & Control Cable Work Shop:
This Work Shop Covers How to Create Cable List for Both LV Cables & Control
Cables.
– Different Calculation Sheets Are illustrated.
11.LV & Control Cable & Breakers Sizing Work Shop:
This Work Shop Covers How to Size Cables (LV & Control Cables) & Breaker
Sizing (MACDB & MDCDB).
– Different Calculation Sheets Are illustrated.
12.Designing of LV AC/DC Main Distrbusition Boards Work Shop:
The Work Shop Covers How to Design (MACDB & MDCDB) Using AutoCAD.
13.Sizing & Designing of Zigzag Transformer:
This Part Covers Operation & The Function of Zigzag Transformers as Well as The
Sizing.
14.Reading & Understanding of Schematic Drawings (Professional Phase):
From Now Here, The Participate Shall Be Able to Well Understand the Schematic
Drawing for Each Equipment, Such as:
A– Power Transformer LCP & MDU.
B– NER.
C– LCC for Each Bay.
D– Remote Control Panel for Each Bay.
E– Remote Protection Panel for Each Bay.
F– MVSWGR’s.
AutoCAD version: The availability of Software for participants is out of scope.
